Xishui County basketball tournament generates nearly 10 million yuan in spending

The second annual “XiBA” men’s basketball tournament concluded in Xishui County, Hubei province, drawing packed crowds and generating nearly ten million yuan in comprehensive regional spending through a novel promotional ticket model.

Championship Decider and Tournament Run

The 35-day competition featured 13 teams playing 48 matches starting August 21, drawing participation from local players across various walks of life, including 39-year-old returning competitor Pan Rui, Chen益 who traveled back repeatedly from Guilin in Guangxi, and township firefighter Fu Lixichen.

Following the final buzzer, Quanshan’s number 48 player, Shang Gaoming, earned the Most Valuable Player honor. “XiBA gets more popular every year,” Shang said after lifting the trophy. “It’s not just a basketball game; it feels like a holiday for the whole city.”

Cultural Integration and Community Festivities

Organizers wove regional culture throughout the month-long tournament, staging Xishui folk songs, acrobatics, and local theatrical performances alongside the athletic schedule. Before tip-off, competing teams exchanged traditional local specialty gifts, including Bahe lotus root starch, Tuanpo chopped steamed bread, Zhuwa preserved duck eggs, Sanhua water chestnuts, Guankou lotus seed bean cakes, and Wanggang rice shrimp.

The bustling market environment provided tangible retail boosts for local vendors. Duan Jia, an employee at the Huajian Valley Scenic Area who manned a booth selling “Tang Xiaoxi” ancient-method brown sugar, noted strong consumer interest and repeat buyers throughout the tournament window.

The 1-Yuan Ticket Strategy and Regional Economic Impact

Central to the tournament’s commercial success was an economic strategy anchored by a 1-yuan universal public welfare ticket. Organizers issued three equivalent credential types: electronic tickets, physical tickets, and ticket redemption vouchers, logging a total of 21,134 ticket sales that established a broad audience base.

To convert this athletic traffic into retail growth, the event management team distributed 9,800 yuan in night market discount coupons and hosted weekly on-site lucky draws at the XiBA official theme market, which independently generated over 20,000 yuan in direct sales during the event cycle. Xishui established a commercial consumption alliance comprising more than 100 prominent local businesses, including Eurasia Home, Huangshang Supermarket, Shengboke Supermarket, Runda International, and the Sanjiaoshan scenic area. Ticket holders unlocked exclusive discounts, package deals, and admission waivers across dining, lodging, retail, entertainment, and tourism sectors.

Digital Reach and Future Outlook

To amplify regional promotion, online creator Liu Dandan’s team conducted live-streamed coverage from local shops and tournament sites, driving both online traffic and physical footfall. While the tournament officially concluded on September 24, promotional discounts tied to the consumption alliance remained active through September 29.

Local authorities announced plans to further develop the XiBA event intellectual property and refine the long-term operational framework of the commercial alliance. The initiative aims to use recurring sports events to stimulate cultural tourism and commerce, sustaining vitality within the county-level consumer market.
