Nîmes Judo Club Celebrates 80th Anniversary with Grand Exhibition and Exhibition

Le Judo Club in Nîmes is preparing to celebrate its 80th anniversary on October 17, marking eight decades of martial arts instruction in the region through a year-long organizational committee established in partnership with the City of Nîmes and the Departmental Council.

The anniversary celebrations will commence on the morning of October 17 with an official commemoration alongside local elected officials, highlighted by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the club’s facility located at 34 rue de Beaucaire. Festivities will then shift at 14:00 local time to the Ludivine-Furnon sports hall, situated near the Stade des Antonins. A grand public exhibition is scheduled to begin at 15:00 at the same venue, featuring synchronized martial arts demonstrations from every group and training section.

Complementing the live demonstrations, an exhibition featuring 80 distinct photographs will showcase club members during their respective training sessions, known as keiko. This photographic display is set to be inaugurated on Monday, October 12, and will remain open to the public at the sports hall through Monday, October 23. The anniversary program will conclude with a private gala dinner accompanied by a DJ, accessible strictly via advance reservation.

Historical Roots and Post-War Expansion

Club leaders Florian Bonet and Marcel Bienvenu have outlined the rich history and institutional progression of the organization leading up to the milestone. The club’s origins trace back to 1946, when physical education teacher Charles Toni founded the Judo Club du Gard. Toni’s efforts focused on developing and promoting judo and broader martial arts disciplines throughout the local region, ultimately establishing national recognition for the organization.
