Jiang Chaoyu wins Asian Games gold in women’s skeet team event

Chinese shooter Jiang Chaoyu secured a gold medal in the women’s skeet team event at the Asian Games, combining with teammates Che Yufei and Jiang Yiting to break the tournament record with a score of 357 targets. The victory capped an ascent that began on a school basketball court in Sichuan province just years prior.

From Sichuan Basketball Courts to Elite Shooting Ranges

Born in 2004, Jiang demonstrated an early affinity for athletics and joined her middle school’s basketball team in Hejiang County, Luzhou. Her transition to shooting sports materialized in 2018 during a campus basketball match, where Luzhou Sports Movement Center shooting coach Tang Congxue spotted her. Tang noted that Jiang’s positioning and focus during shooting stood out from her peers. Following initial discussions, Jiang expressed curiosity about competitive shooting and joined the Luzhou center in July 2018, initially training in women’s pistol before transitioning to clay target disciplines.

Rapid Progression Through Provincial and National Ranks

After a short provincial training camp where she first experienced the clay target project, Jiang was recruited into the Sichuan provincial shooting team clay target training team in March 2019. Her development pace outpaced standard training curves. Within roughly six months of picking up the discipline, she claimed a championship at the provincial clay target competitions. Her coach highlighted exceptional psychological resilience under pressure as a defining trait. After completing a qualification path comprising three domestic events and two international competitions, Jiang earned the third-highest total points to claim her spot on the national Asian Games roster.

Asian Games Record and Future Olympic Ambitions

The Chinese trio of Jiang, Che, and Jiang Yiting executed a consistent series to set the 357-hit Asian Games record in the team competition. Reflecting on the performance, Tang expressed high expectations for the young athlete’s trajectory, targeting a spot on the final roster for the Los Angeles Olympics in two years. Following her return from the Asian Games, Jiang is slated to resume training under national team directives in preparation for upcoming world championship fixtures.
