England manager Thomas Tuchel has stated that Chelsea forward Cole Palmer missed another crucial opportunity to impress on the international stage after withdrawing from the squad ahead of the UEFA Nations League opening match against Spain. Palmer, 24, pulled out of the selection due to a muscular problem, marking another absence from national team duty following a period disrupted by injuries that previously kept him out of the World Cup squad.
The forward had earned a recall after a strong start to the domestic campaign with Chelsea, recording four goals and two assists in seven matches. However, his withdrawal prevented him from participating in the upcoming fixtures against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Croatia. Tuchel addressed the situation directly when speaking to reporters ahead of the competitive block.
“It is another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities,” Tuchel said. “I do not blame him for it, it is simply a fact. He misses too many training camps due to injuries.”
The Value of Camp Presence
Tuchel emphasized that evaluation for the national team depends heavily on direct observation during training sessions and matches within the squad’s environment. The manager noted that players cannot reach the highest level of assessment without physical presence on the pitch.
“I just want to base it on what I myself witness and see inside my team. For that, you have to be in the camp,” Tuchel stated. “If you are not, there is a higher level to impress at that you cannot reach, because you can only do it with me on the pitch and with us on the pitch. It is a missed opportunity.”
The manager also rejected suggestions that the national team coaching staff coordinated with club officials to manage the player’s workload by allowing him an early exit. Reports noted that Palmer played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s defeat against Brentford before linking up with the national selection.

“He plays with discomfort and pain, and he cannot perform at the highest level with discomfort and pain,” Tuchel said. “Chelsea informed us. That is what my understanding is. We are not managing the workload.”
Tuchel reinforced the cultural standards established within the England setup under the revised FIFA calendar, which merges the traditional September and October windows into an extended three-week period.
“This is not an international break. It is a competitive environment where the players love to train and be together. That is what we have created. We will never compromise on that,” the manager indicated. “We will never let the feeling take hold that players do not want to come. We focus on the guys who are very keen to play for England.”
Upcoming Schedule and Fixtures
England opens its Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley Stadium, operating under the revised international match calendar. Following the fixture in London, the squad travels to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 29. The itinerary continues with an away fixture against Croatia in Rijeka on October 3, concluded by a return match against the Czech team at Wembley three nights later.
