The 2026 Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Men’s Basketball League, widely known as the Meng BA, will officially tip off on Oct. 1, bringing together 14 regional representative teams for a tournament format. Organizers announced the schedule, player eligibility rules, and official group draws during a press conference and drawing ceremony held on the morning of Sept. 24.
Organized by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Sports Department and hosted by the Inner Mongolia Basketball Association, the 2026 tournament features squads representing 12 leagues and municipalities, alongside two separately planned cities: Manzhouli and Erlianhot.
Tournament Format and Confirmed Match Schedules
The 2026 Meng BA adopts a hybrid structure combining centralized group stage play with a late-stage home-and-away playoff system. According to the competition regulations released by event organizers, the 14 participating teams are split evenly into two groups:
- Group A: Alxa, Hulunbuir, Chifeng, Ordos, Baotou, Bayannur, and Manzhouli.
- Group B: Tongliao, Wuhai, Hohhot, Xilin Gol, Ulanqab, Hinggan League, and Erlianhot.
The regular season is scheduled to run from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7, utilizing centralized tournament hubs in Tongliao and Alxa. The top four teams from each group will advance to the postseason. The first stage of the playoffs is set for Oct. 28 through Nov. 4, while the semifinals and finals will take place from mid-November to early December. The semifinals and finals will follow a best-of-three series format, with higher-seeded playoff teams securing home-court advantage. Erlianhot is scheduled to host the final phase of the postseason, bringing regional matches directly into local arenas.
Strict Eligibility Rules and Roster Caps
To safeguard competitive balance and protect local talent development, the organizing committee instituted stringent player registration guidelines. The league is restricted to athletes aged 18 to 45. Teams must adhere to strict quotas regarding local players, cross-league players from within the autonomous region, and out-of-province roster additions.
Out-of-province players are subject to a strict “four quarters, eight person-times” usage policy. Crucially, the league strictly bans registered Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) athletes and individuals currently serving disciplinary penalties for match-fixing or behavioral violations from participating. Organizers confirmed that rigorous eligibility audits will remain active throughout the entire tournament lifecycle to maintain fairness.
Branding, Mascots, and Opening Ceremonies
During the IP series unveiling at the press conference, officials debuted the official tournament slogan: “Fight for the City, Embrace the Passion.” Organizers stated that the slogan reflects both municipal pride and the widespread enthusiasm of local fans. Alongside the slogan, the league introduced its official mascot, “Xiao Xiao,” which was showcased via an AI-animated self-introduction that integrates regional grassland culture with basketball motifs.
The event also featured the official presentation of the 2025 season championship rings. Mengke Bateer, president of the Inner Mongolia Basketball Association, presented the rings to championship representatives to commemorate the previous season’s outcomes. Organizers additionally showcased the full suite of tournament equipment, including the new championship trophy, official game balls, commemorative balls, and team uniforms for all 14 participating municipalities.
Economic Integration and Regional Sports Tourism
Beyond the hardwood, regional authorities intend to use the Meng BA to stimulate local commerce, tourism, and hospitality. By transitioning the later stages of the tournament to a home-and-away format, the league aims to encourage fans to travel across Inner Mongolia’s municipal centers. Officials expect visiting supporters to generate tourism traffic, directly boosting local consumption by pairing match-day attendance with regional sightseeing and culinary tourism.
