Artūrs Šilovs struggles as Penguins lose 7-4 to Red Wings

Head coach Dan Muse addressed the media following the contest, fielding questions regarding whether Šilovs is on equal footing in the crease competition with Russian Sergei Murashov and Finnish goaltender Joel Blomqvist. Muse emphasized that evaluations remain ongoing while pointing directly to the netminder’s track record.

“Everyone is competing for something in training camp. Artie [Artūrs] had a strong previous season. We haven’t forgotten about that. This is an exhibition game,” Muse noted.

Muse stressed the urgency required as the preseason schedule winds down, noting that time is short before meaningful games begin.

“We need to find our game, both as a team and individually for each player. That needs to happen urgently because there aren’t many exhibition games left,” the coach stated.

Defensive Breakdowns and Rebounds

Šilovs pointed to tactical issues in front of him after the final horn, highlighting how the Red Wings capitalized on scoring areas by directing pucks toward the leg pad zones to generate chaotic rebounds.

“We gave the opponents too many very high-quality scoring chances. We cannot allow opponents to win so many loose pucks,” Šilovs added, echoing his assessment of second-chance opportunities.

Despite the high goals-against total, the coaching staff maintained that a single exhibition outing does not overwrite prior performance. Muse reiterated that the organization values the developmental steps Šilovs took during the previous campaign.

“Artie showed what he can accomplish in this league last season. We haven’t suddenly forgotten about that. He progressed last season. He will continue to progress moving forward,” Muse said.

Regular Season Timeline

The Pittsburgh Penguins have two preseason matchups remaining on their exhibition schedule to iron out defensive coverage and solidify their goaltending rotation. The club will open the NHL regular-season slate on Oct. 1 with a matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers.
