Tournament Evolution and Mexico’s Hosting History
International youth baseball competition organized by the World Baseball Softball Confederation underwent significant structural adjustments over nearly four decades. The tournament began in 1989 as an under-16 competition, with Japan capturing the inaugural global title that year while also serving as host. In 2012, the governing body lowered the age threshold to under-15, establishing the current competitive format for elite youth national teams.
Mexico has established a prominent role in hosting the youth showcase under the current age classification. Out of the seven editions contested under the U-15 banner, four have taken place in Mexican cities. Chihuahua served as the first Mexican host in 2012, welcoming 15 national selections where Venezuela claimed the gold medal with a 10-2 victory over Cuba, while Chinese Taipei secured the bronze by defeating host Mexico 6-1.
Subsequent editions distributed global titles across different continents and nations. Sinaloa hosted the 2014 tournament, where Cuba secured a 6-3 win against the United States to capture its first U-15 world title. Two years later, in Iwaki, Japan, Cuba successfully defended its crown to become the first country to retain the under-15 trophy. The United States claimed the championship in 2018. Following the cancellation of the 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition resumed with the United States retaining its title status.
Global Competition and Professional Pathways
Japan secured its second historical title and its first in the U-15 category during the 2024 tournament hosted in Colombia, adding to its 1989 under-16 championship. The competition provides young athletes with their first official opportunity to represent their home countries while performing in front of international scouts representing professional baseball organizations.

The WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup Mérida 2026 spans ten days of competition across Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Teams will play through the group stage before advancing through the tournament bracket toward the championship final on October 4.
