Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald revealed that Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton accused the Seahawks of cheating during preparations for their 2024 season opener. According to reporting and interview transcripts, Payton threatened to publicly compare Seattle’s scouting methods to the New England Patriots’ infamous SpyGate scandal before ultimately backing down.
An Opening-Week Clash Born on Twitter
The unusual dispute surfaced during an interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger. Macdonald recounted that ahead of his head coaching debut against Denver in September 2024, Seattle’s staff compiled approximately 100 plays from Denver training camp footage that fans had shared publicly on Twitter. The Seahawks coaching staff scouted the clips as part of their routine game-plan preparation.
SpyGate and Michigan Comparisons
According to Macdonald, Sean Payton took sharp exception to the tactic.
“He basically threatened to come out publicly and do a whole Patriot, like Spygate type of thing,” Macdonald said during the interview. “And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Oh my God, we didn’t cheat. He thought it was a Michigan thing, or we had a plant and the whole thing.'”
The Threat of Legal Action
Faced with the prospect of public accusations, the Seahawks organization stood firm. Macdonald noted that management and the coaching staff prepared an immediate legal response to protect the franchise’s reputation against what they considered baseless claims.
“So we had to counter with him to say, ‘Hey, look, if you come out with this, we’re going to sue you, because it’s not true,'” Macdonald explained. He added that while Payton continued to pressure general manager John Schneider during the buildup, the threat of legal action halted any public escalation.
From Preseason Friction to Combine Courtesy
Despite the high-stakes friction behind the scenes, the tension did not linger into the following offseason. Macdonald shared that when the two coaches crossed paths at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis the following spring, Payton was entirely courteous, putting the preseason confrontation behind them.
The rivalry renews on the field when the Seattle Seahawks face the Denver Broncos in Week 6 on Thursday Night Football in Denver. Both organizations enter the matchup with their coaching staffs fully focused on on-field execution as the regular season schedule intensifies.
