Chelsea were the second-highest spenders in the Premier League, bringing in 11 new players for £351 million, yet the Blues finished bottom of the net spend tab. The promoted trio of Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town all made the top five as they look to avoid the drop back to the Championship. Hull spent £178 million on 18 new signings and sold six for just £17 million.

On the pitch, several clubs have defied pre-season expectations during the opening five matches of the campaign.
