Thailand sports minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul announced that the nation’s delegations at the Asian Games remain fully alert to anti-doping regulations, following a failed drug test by 19-year-old badminton player Pitchamon Opatniputh in Nagoya, Japan. Pitchamon tested positive for furosemide in an out-of-competition test conducted last Thursday, marking the first confirmed doping case of the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Athletes and National Associations Warned Following Positive Test
The positive result emerged from an out-of-competition sample taken on Thursday, September 17, placing the former women’s singles world junior champion under provisional suspension from the Asian Games. Pitchamon has the option to challenge the suspension through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In response to the development, Thai sports authorities moved quickly to address the delegation’s compliance protocols.
“All athletes know that using drugs, they must be careful in the use of all drugs. Because if a substance that is not allowed is detected, it will impact the competition for sure,” Surasak told Thai media at the Games, according to Reuters reporting from Nagoya. “We assure that all associations, national teams are aware and careful. It could be the case of an individual who was acting out of ignorance.”

Thai sports officials are pursuing standard verification procedures while investigating the circumstances surrounding the positive test. Surasak confirmed that the Thai delegation has officially requested an analysis of the back-up B sample to verify the initial finding. Furthermore, he noted that the athlete informed team officials the prohibited substance might be linked to an anti-inflammatory ointment.
Furosemide is a diuretic commonly utilized to eliminate water from the body, a mechanism that can facilitate rapid weight loss. While regulatory bodies strictly monitor its presence in competitive sports due to its potential use as a masking agent, athletes occasionally attribute inadvertent infractions to topical treatments or contaminated products.

Pitchamon was entered to compete in the women’s team event at the Nagoya Games.
Following the suspension, Thailand’s women’s team faced China in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. The Thai squad, which secured a team bronze medal three years prior at the Hangzhou Asian Games, was eliminated after a 3-0 defeat against the Chinese team. The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are scheduled to run through October 4, with various disciplines continuing across host venues in Japan.
