Berlin Olympics Dreams Fade After Left Party’s Election Victory

Political momentum behind Berlin’s bid to host the Olympic Games faces a severe challenge following the recent regional election victory of the Left party. Elif Eralp, the leading candidate for the Left, declared that the city’s consideration for the international sports showcase is effectively finished due to more pressing public needs.

Berlin Election Results Shift Political Landscape for Olympic Bid

Following the Abgeordnetenhauswahl in Berlin, the political configuration steering the capital has altered significantly. Unlike the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) under Sports Senator Iris Spranger, both the Left party and the Greens campaigned on explicit opposition to an Olympic bid.

The anti-bid positioning resonated with voters focused on economic pressures. Kaweh Niroomand, the Olympic commissioner for Berlin and manager of the BR Volleys, observed that the Left successfully targeted issues concerning housing and rental costs, which hold priority for younger residents. Despite the political headwinds, Niroomand maintained that he intends to continue advocating for the project and expressed a willingness to discuss potential adjustments to the Berlin+ concept with political opponents.

Upcoming Decision in Baden-Baden and Divergent Regional Support

The political friction arrives just ahead of a crucial milestone. On the upcoming Saturday in Baden-Baden, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is set to select the official German candidate for an upcoming Olympic bid. Berlin stands alongside Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region as a contender, though analysts view the capital as an underdog amid the ongoing political uncertainty.

Unlike Munich and areas within North Rhine-Westfalen, where populations have expressed clear backing for hosting duties through public votes, Berlin lacks a definitive referendum confirming widespread civic support. Although the outgoing Abgeordnetenhaus passed a resolution in May to support the Berlin+ framework, local opponents have mobilized a potential citizens’ initiative to block the bid retroactively.

Klara Schedlich, sports policy spokesperson for the Greens in Berlin, told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that given the strong standing of the Left and the position of the Greens as the second-strongest force in the prospective government, pursuing the project lacks practical viability.

DOSB Maintains Current Timeline Despite Local Shifts

Despite the electoral outcome in the capital, the leadership of the German Olympic Sports Confederation indicated that the immediate process remains unaffected. Otto Fricke, the chief executive of the DOSB, stated that the election result does not alter the current schedule and emphasized that assessing how local parties will position themselves up to September 26 remains premature.

Addressing why the national candidate selection occurs so soon after regional polling, the DOSB pointed to its existing statutes.
