Route du Rhum: Defending Champion Thomas Ruyant Withdraws Due to Lack of Sponsor

Just under two months before the scheduled start in Saint-Malo, defending champion Thomas Ruyant has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Route du Rhum transatlantique race, citing an inability to secure a major corporate sponsor for his newly built Imoca yacht.

The French sailor, who claimed victory in the Imoca division during the previous edition of the elite solo transatlantic race, confirmed his withdrawal on Monday.

Financial Hurdles and a Brand-New Imoca Foiler

Ruyant’s campaign faced a stringent budget shortfall that ultimately derailed his defense. Operating a high-end offshore sailing program requires substantial capital, particularly when launching and developing a brand-new vessel.

Looking further ahead toward the Vendée Globe 2028, operating expenses for his TR Racing stable were projected between 4 à 5 millions per year. His newly constructed Imoca yacht featuring state-of-the-art foils was officially launched this summer before being moved into storage in a hangar in Lorient.

A Wider Sponsoring Squeeze in Offshore Sailing

Ruyant’s sudden exit underscores a broader financial squeeze currently affecting the professional offshore racing circuit. The competitive market for corporate sponsorships has tightened noticeably, leaving several high-profile skippers scrambling for funding.

Established Imoca navigators such as Armel Tripon and Maxime Sorel have also found themselves searching for necessary financial backing to secure their berths on the upcoming starting grid, highlighting an increasingly difficult economic environment for elite sailing teams preparing for major transatlantic fixtures.

What Lies Ahead for TR Racing

Despite missing the November 1 departure toward Guadeloupe, Ruyant insists his competitive career is far from finished. The veteran of multiple transatlantic events—including the Transat Jacques Vabre and previous editions of the Route du Rhum—remains focused on future offshore challenges.

Organizers of the Route du Rhum have not yet announced adjustments to the entry list following Ruyant’s withdrawal, as preparations continue toward the traditional start in Saint-Malo.
