Legendary former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi has passed away at the age of 84, according to an announcement by the team. Accorsi shaped the trajectory of the franchise through prominent front office decisions, most notably orchestrating the draft-day trade that brought Eli Manning to New York and laying the personnel groundwork for two Super Bowl championships.
News of his passing broke when NFL insider Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network shared the announcement on X, formerly Twitter.
“Ernie helped shape the course of New York Giants history through his vision, leadership and unwavering belief in building a championship organization,” Giants President John Mara said in an official statement released by the team. “Beyond his accomplishments as a football executive, he was a trusted advisor and dear friend. His legacy will forever be part of the Giants, and he will be greatly missed.”
Building a Championship Foundation
Accorsi took over as the Giants’ general manager in 1998. His tenure is perhaps best defined by the 2004 NFL Draft, when he engineered a draft-day trade. The deal involved draft compensation and Philip Rivers to acquire Manning, a pivotal move that anchored the franchise under center.
That quarterback acquisition, paired with defensive additions like standout pass rusher Justin Tuck, established the backbone of the roster that captured Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI. Accorsi also appointed head coach Tom Coughlin, establishing a partnership that steered the organization.
Before his time in New York, Accorsi spent time with the Baltimore Colts and Cleveland Browns.
Tributes Across the NFL
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement highlighting Accorsi’s standing among league executives.
“Ernie Accorsi was one of the most respected football minds in NFL history and a dear friend whose wisdom and perspective I valued tremendously,” Goodell said. “Throughout his remarkable career, he shaped championship-caliber clubs and earned the admiration of everyone who worked with him.”
Accorsi retired from his post as general manager in 2006.
