Belgian Olympic swimmer Lucas Henveaux claimed victory at the MARNATON eDreams Cadaqués by FIATC on Saturday, September 19, outpacing a record-breaking field in the waters of the Cap de Creus. According to reports from Sport, Henveaux completed the flagship 6.5-kilometer distance with a winning time of 1:16:34 in the waters of the Cap de Creus.
Record Turnout Draws Over 2,000 Swimmers to Cap de Creus
The 19th edition of the flagship MARNATON eDreams Cup event established a new participation milestone, drawing more than 2,000 athletes to the waters off Cadaqués. As the premier open-water swimming circuit in Spain, the event featured three core individual distances alongside the dedicated youth competition, the MARNATON Kids by SPORT, which welcomed young swimmers aged 5 to 13 across distances ranging from 50 to 400 meters.
Event organizers deployed an extensive safety framework to manage the fleet of athletes. According to race director David Campà, the operation utilized more than 80 kayaks, roughly 10 rescue water scooters, and around 30 support and rescue vessels. “Cadaqués and the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus never defraudan, and with a mar como el de hoy los participantes han podido disfrutar como nunca,” Campà stated, emphasizing that the extensive maritime deployment ensured participant safety throughout the course.
Podium Finishes Across the 6.5-Kilometer Elite Distance
In the men’s elite 6.5 km race, Lucas Henveaux secured the top step of the podium ahead of fellow Belgian swimmer Florentin Lovens, who finished second with a time of 1:17:08. Rafa Cabanillas, coach of the CE MARNATON, claimed third place with a time of 1:17:11 to round out the men’s podium.
The women’s 6.5 km race saw Aida Bertran capture the overall victory with a time of 1:24:58. Ona de Miguel secured second place stopping the clock at 1:28:30, while Mireia Gómez finished third with a time of 1:37:21.
Results Across Shorter Distances
Competitors across the 4.5-kilometer and 2.5-kilometer divisions also completed their races on Saturday under favorable open-water conditions. In the 4.5 km men’s category, Mario Guillén took first place in 1:02:14, followed closely by Sergi Romeu (1:02:17) and Alberto Arroyo (1:02:18). Cinta Altadill won the women’s 4.5 km event in 1:05:30, ahead of Sonia Fargas (1:05:53) and Chloé Verkindt (1:06:45).
In the short-distance 2.5 km race, Dani Ortiz led the men’s field with a time of 0:33:04, beating out Teo Amor (0:34:35) and Marcel Yagüe (0:34:37). Avril Amor claimed the women’s 2.5 km crown in 0:34:45, with Iria Pérez taking second (0:35:56) and Clara Pérez taking third (0:39:26).
What Comes Next for the MARNATON Circuit
The open-water season continues next month as the circuit shifts location to the Balearic Islands. The MARNATON eDreams Ibiza by Baleària is scheduled to host its fourth edition on October 10.
