Trump announced the ban via his online platform, citing critical reporting and alleging that the outlets spread false information, though the statement provided no specific evidence to support the claim.

The latest restriction targets major American news organizations, cutting off their reporters from presidential events. According to Die Zeit, Trump indicated that additional media houses could face similar entry bans in the future. As of the initial announcement, representatives for CNN, MS NOW, Politico, and the National Press Club had not issued formal responses.
This move follows a series of administrative actions curtailing media access across Washington. In February 2025, Trump blocked journalists from the Associated Press from entering the Oval Office, boarding Air Force One, and attending other events. That restriction came in response to the news agency’s editorial decision not to adopt the administration’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The Associated Press subsequently filed a lawsuit challenging the restriction, and that legal proceeding remains pending.
Broader Press Freedom Clashes and Legal Challenges
The White House ban compounds existing tensions between the administration and independent journalism outlets. Beyond physical lockouts, Trump has repeatedly called on broadcasters to cancel news and satire programs that feature criticism of him and his government. Trump also urged the Federal Communications Commission to strip broadcast licenses from networks airing critical reports, according to Die Zeit.
Similar conflicts have unfolded within federal departments. Following a legal challenge by The New York Times, these Pentagon media restrictions were declared partially unconstitutional in March, leading the agency to close its press office to reporters in June.
