McVay: Rams ‘Hopeful’ Aaron Donald Will Play vs. Giants on MNF

The Los Angeles Rams are hopeful that defensive tackle Aaron Donald will return to the field for their upcoming Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Giants. Head coach Sean McVay announced that Donald would participate in a full practice session, raising expectations for the three-time Defensive Player of the Year to make his season debut.

McVay Outlines Donald’s Practice Status

Speaking to reporters, Sean McVay stated that the team remains optimistic about Donald’s availability for the primetime contest. The veteran defensive lineman initially retired in March 2024 before reversing his decision and coming out of retirement on August 30.

Donald did not travel with the team for their Week 1 matchup in Australia, where the Rams dropped a 27-7 decision to the San Francisco 49ers. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport previously reported that internal expectations favored Donald making his return against New York. Stu Jackson of the team’s official website confirmed that the 35-year-old defensive tackle was a full participant in Thursday’s session.

Defensive Line Pressure and Roster Adjustments

The Rams’ defense enters Week 2 seeking immediate improvement following a difficult opening performance. Los Angeles failed to record a single sack against San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, while surrendering 174 rushing yards at an average of 5.8 yards per carry.

Compounding those front-seven struggles, marquee offseason addition Myles Garrett failed to register a tackle or a sack in his team debut. Garrett was subsequently placed on injured reserve due to arthroscopic knee surgery, sidelining him for a minimum of four games and placing increased pressure on the defensive interior.

Facing the Giants on Monday Night

During his most recent campaign in 2023, Donald anchored the Los Angeles front across 16 games, recording 53 tackles, 23 quarterback hits, 16 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and three passes defended.

On the opposing side, the Giants enter the Week 2 clash after allowing only two sacks during a 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Kickoff between Los Angeles and New York is scheduled for Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. local time).
