Kawhi Leonard is officially back with the Toronto Raptors after the NBA approved a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. The transaction concludes months of speculation and brings the 35-year-old forward back to the franchise he led to win the grands honneurs in 2019 before he joined his hometown Clippers in free agency.
The Trade Return for Los Angeles
In exchange for Leonard, the Clippers received a substantial package. Los Angeles received star forward Brandon Ingram, point guard Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round selections.
The deal had stalled while the league investigated Leonard and the Clippers regarding salary cap circumvention. The NBA concluded its probe on September 2, handing down a $700,000 fine to Leonard without suspending him or voiding his contract.
League Discipline and Front Office Penalties
While Leonard escaped a suspension, the NBA levied severe punishments against the Clippers organization following an independent investigation that uncovered systematic wrongdoing and multiple major rule violations. The league stripped the franchise of five first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033 and hit the team with a $30 million US fine.
Individual executives also faced heavy suspensions. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker were each suspended for one year, while President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank was excluded for six months.
Front Office Reaction and On-Court Outlook
Bobby Webster, the general manager and vice-president of the Raptors, expressed enthusiasm over securing the veteran forward’s return. “We are thrilled to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto,” Webster said in a statement. “His impact on our organization, our city, and our country is undeniable. He embodies the competitive spirit and championship mentality that we value.”
Webster added that the organization believes Leonard’s leadership, experience, and talent will help push the team toward a next title. He also acknowledged the departures of Ingram and Dick, praising their daily work ethic, character, and excellence.
During the previous NBA season with the Clippers, Leonard averaged 27.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.9 turnovers, and 0.4 blocks per contest.
