Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patri secured the girls’ singles U17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships in Chengdu, defeating fellow Indian Shaina Manimuthu 11-15, 15-10, 15-12 in an all-Indian final, according to reports from the Orissa Post. The victory preserves the U17 continental crown for India for the second year following a previous title run.
Path to the Final in Chengdu
Second-seeded Patri navigated a challenging tournament draw in China to reach the championship match. After receiving a first-round bye, she opened her campaign with a three-game battle against China’s Zhou Jing Li, prevailing 18-16, 12-15, 15-13. She followed that performance with a 15-9, 15-12 victory over Japan’s Shizuku Kashio and a dominant 15-8, 15-8 quarterfinal win against China’s Lin Heng Men. In the semifinals, Patri held off China’s Yu Ying Gui 15-9, 11-15, 15-11 in a tense deciding game.
On the opposite side of the draw, sixth-seeded Shaina Manimuthu mounted an equally impressive run to set up the rematch of their earlier Bengaluru encounter. Manimuthu’s tournament path featured a strong quarterfinal win over Japan’s Yui Itabashi and a composed 15-13, 15-12 semifinal victory against Japan’s Anon Okimoto, where she maintained her focus through the closing points.
Title History and Continental Success
The triumph adds a continental U17 crown to Patri’s resume, complementing her 2024 U15 Asian title. Earlier in the season, the young player captured her first international title at the Pontianak International Challenge and claimed the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru. Patri’s latest win keeps the U17 girls’ singles trophy in Indian hands following Diksha Sudhakar’s victory in the previous edition. Manimuthu earned a silver medal after her strong showing, having previously captured the U15 Asian title last year.
Additional Medal Success for the Indian Contingent
Beyond the singles final, the Indian contingent added another podium finish in the U15 division. The boys’ doubles pair of Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma secured a bronze medal after reaching the semifinals. The duo bowed out in the penultimate round against the Chinese Taipei pair of Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou, dropping the match 5-15, 10-15 to conclude a productive outing at the continental championships.
