Tottenham’s ongoing search for their first Premier League victory of the season produced another blank as Roberto De Zerbi’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton. Despite energy, possession, and purposeful football during the opening stages, the most important element of the match remained absent.
Spurs have now failed to score in the league this season. Everton capitalized on the hosts’ inability to convert their approach play into concrete goals, allowing the visitors to leave with a point after an afternoon where Tottenham’s finishing repeatedly let them down.
De Zerbi Shakes Up Starting XI as Solanke and Marmoush Lead Attack
In an attempt to inject urgency into the campaign, De Zerbi made four changes to his lineup. Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush started together in attack for the first time, though injuries continued to sideline several established options for the squad.
Early signs offered encouragement as Archie Gray pushed forward regularly and Savio attempted to unsettle Everton with his dribbling. Tottenham moved the ball confidently through midfield, creating situations from which goals might have developed. Jan Paul van Hecke nearly opened the scoring after Andy Robertson delivered an excellent free kick, while Mateus Fernandes found himself in a promising position before opting for an extra touch instead of shooting first time.
Solanke looked short of rhythm after spending five months without starting a Premier League match. His touch was occasionally loose, his hold-up play lacked authority, and Tottenham struggled to build sustained attacks around him. Marmoush offered brief flashes without imposing himself, and Savio repeatedly beat defenders only to struggle with his final choice.
Everton Threat Exposes Tottenham Frustration
Everton carried plenty of danger of their own, ultimately creating several of the clearer opportunities in the match. Antonin Kinsky was forced to make three saves, including one to repair his own mistake after presenting possession directly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Behind the attack, Micky van de Ven and Van Hecke delivered impressive performances. Tottenham’s captain produced another assured display, while Van Hecke looked comfortable defensively and when stepping into midfield. Rodrigo Bentancur exerted strong influence before his withdrawal shortly after the hour mark, and Sandro Tonali demonstrated improving sharpness by repeatedly switching play with accurate diagonal passes.
De Zerbi turned to his bench for inspiration, introducing Mathys Tel, Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus, and James Maddison. Bergvall came closest to breaking the deadlock, forcing Jordan Pickford into a late save with a curling effort directed toward the bottom corner. It proved to be Tottenham’s clearest warning, arriving far too late in the contest.
