Saturday’s preparatory session featured the 20 all-star players assisting coaches as they worked with 58 elementary school girls in catching drills and batting practice. For the teenage competitors, the afternoon offered immediate technical takeaways from some of the game’s most accomplished hitters and pitchers.
Kobe Koryo High School infielder Mikura Nishigaki noted the former slugger’s imposing stature and his core instruction.
“Matsui-san had a big frame,” Nishigaki told reporters. “He advised us to watch the ball for a long time, so I want to apply that. Tomorrow, I think I’ll find out what I’m lacking. I want to find my weaknesses and put them to use.”
Other members of the high school squad echoed the sentiment of testing themselves against seasoned greatness. Gakufu Ishikawa pitcher Sona Honsuwa emphasized her primary weapon on the mound.
“Since my fastball is my strength, if I face Matsui-san, I want to throw my fastball with everything I have,” Honsuwa said, describing her mindset as an even split of tension and excitement.
Chasing a Positive Tokyo Dome Result
For several players, Sunday’s matchup at Tokyo Dome carries extra motivation tied to past tournament outcomes. Rissho Shonan pitcher Mizuki Harada pointed to previous runner-up finishes at the high school selection tournament held at the venue.
“I’m looking forward to experiencing firsthand how much I can hold my own tomorrow and using that for next time,” Harada said. Noting that she reached the high school selection finals at Tokyo Dome in both the spring and previous spring but finished second each time, she added, “I don’t have good memories there, so I want to make good memories.”
“There is some anxiety, but I’m looking forward to it,” Suzuki said. “Matsui-san’s swing and his hits were powerful. As an outfielder, I want to catch his hits.”
