Xavi Hernández has officially begun his tenure as the head coach of the Netherlands national team, arriving at the Royal Dutch Football Association headquarters in Zeist to launch a multi-year sporting project that runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The former Barcelona and Al Sadd manager steps into the role following a departure from club management that lasted more than two years, taking over a Dutch squad looking to regroup after a Round of 16 elimination at the 2026 World Cup.
The appointment marks a notable shift for the Oranje, bringing a manager steeped in the positional principles of the Cruyffista lineage back to a federation deeply tied to that tactical history. Speaking at his official introductory press conference, Xavi addressed his appointment and outlined his vision for the squad.
“I don’t care if I’m the third option or the tenth option. I feel honored to be the coach of the Netherlands,” Xavi said. He added that elite footballing values drive his approach: “I want a team that is ambitious and shows passion. We must have possession of the ball, play attacking football. I am here to compete, enjoy, and win.”
The Selection Process and Coaching Staff
Nigel de Jong, the director of elite football for the Dutch federation, detailed the recruitment timeline during the press briefing. The governing body evaluated several candidates following the 2026 World Cup before finalizing the agreement with Xavi.
“There were four candidates and discussions were initiated, though not simultaneously,” De Jong explained. Initial outreach went to Pep Guardiola, who opted to take a sabbatical. Arne Slot emerged as another candidate but indicated a preference for club management, while Michael Reiziger was also evaluated before the federation turned its full focus toward Xavi.
Xavi’s backroom staff in Zeist blends familiarity with continuity. Sergio Alegre and Óscar Hernández join as assistant coaches, while Iván Torres takes charge of physical performance. The group also retains internal expertise with Ruud van Nistelrooy continuing as an assistant after working within the national setup during the World Cup, alongside Adil Ramzi, who was promoted from the Under-19 team, and goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks.
Squad Dynamics and Immediate Outlook
The new manager has already initiated contact with key members of the player pool, including team captain and defender Virgil van Dijk, as well as midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Regarding the Barcelona midfielder, Xavi expressed hope for a swift return to fitness.
“Hopefully Frenkie can recover soon, he is a very important player for Barça and for the national team,” Xavi noted. “He is motivated by our arrival.”
The Oranje are scheduled to face high-level international competition shortly, with Germany as the first big test for the new technical staff’s tactical framework.
