Tottenham Hotspur has cut its stadium software license costs by over 85 percent after replacing VMware with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) infrastructure solutions, according to official disclosures and reports by ZDNet Korea. The Premier League club overhauled its stadium data center and network architecture to address changing software policies while deploying artificial intelligence-driven management tools.
Infrastructure Overhaul and Cost Reductions at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
The tech migration shifts Tottenham’s core server and storage environments onto HPE GreenLake, while replacing previous virtualization setups with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials (VME), according to HPE announcements. Rob Pickering, Tottenham’s chief technology officer, stated that while cost reduction served as a primary driver for the switch—yielding an 85 percent drop in licensing fees—the club declined to disclose exact contract figures or the specific legacy VMware product tier previously deployed.
Following the buyout, Broadcom discontinued several standalone product offerings and tightened bundle-focused sales policies, requiring some corporate customers to weigh high-cost bundle contracts even when utilizing only a fraction of the included components.
Deploying AI Operations for a Multi-Use Venue
Beyond immediate software savings, Tottenham prioritized the establishment of an artificial intelligence-driven operations (AIOps) framework. Pickering emphasized that a lean technology team manages the multi-use venue, making automated monitoring and early anomaly detection essential for day-to-day stability.
“If virtualization is not part of a broader AI operations stack, its value diminishes,” Pickering said, adding that connecting all operational elements under a single pane of glass outweighed the supplier-switch savings alone.
The modernization project centers on the 63,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London. Operating nearly 365 days a year, the multi-purpose arena hosts Premier League fixtures alongside NFL games, concerts, and rugby league matches. The venue’s basement-level data center and surrounding infrastructure link numerous network connection points, including roughly 1,800 Wi-Fi access points, 700 Bluetooth beacons, 1,849 IPTV screens, and 519 CCTV cameras.
Hardware Upgrades and Wireless Connectivity Challenges
To power the venue’s backend, Tottenham installed HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 servers alongside HPE Alletra Storage MP arrays. Network connectivity is simultaneously undergoing upgrades to Wi-Fi 7 backed by HPE Aruba Central, a rollout that Pickering noted was experiencing slight delays but remains on track for completion within a month.

Engineering robust wireless coverage inside the arena presents distinct structural hurdles. Pickering described the stadium as resembling a massive Faraday cage constructed from glass and steel, which naturally dampens wireless signals. On matchdays, up to 30,000 spectators frequently connect to the stadium’s Wi-Fi network simultaneously, requiring high-density hardware replacements to proceed with minimal disruption to ongoing events.
The club’s technology staff continues to finalize the stadium-wide infrastructure updates. Further official updates regarding the network transition are expected as the final phase of the Aruba Central deployment concludes.
