The Rouge et Or football program of Université Laval opened its milestone 30th season in dominant fashion on August 30, defeating the McGill Redbirds 37-15 during the annual Match en blanc at Stade TELUS-Université Laval, according to official university reports.
Playing before a crowd of 16,077 spectators in Quebec City, fifth-year quarterback Arnaud Desjardins delivered a flawless start to the campaign. Desjardins completed his first 15 passes of the night, finishing his performance with 25 completions on 28 attempts for 290 yards and three touchdowns.
A High-Flying Opening Act
The evening began with a theatrical pre-game entrance featuring parachutistes and an overhead rainbow, setting the stage for an explosive start from the home offense. On the game’s opening possession, Desjardins orchestrated a six-play drive capped by a 25-yard touchdown pass to receiver Isaac Gaillardetz.
The very next offensive sequence yielded a similar result. Desjardins connected with receiver Simon Potvin for another major score, cementing an early command of the contest.
Defensive Pressure and Special Teams Domination
While the offense established rhythm early, head coach Marc Fortier’s defense stifled the Redbirds throughout the evening. Linebacker Étienne Delisle generated the first turnover of the season by stripping the ball away from the opposing quarterback.
Laval’s front seven overwhelmed the McGill protection scheme, racking up eight total sacks. Defensive lineman Yoann Miangué spearheaded the pass-rush disruption with two sacks and a blocked kick. The defense also contributed an interception and a stellar special teams outing from kicker and linebacker Felipe Forteza, who converted all three of his field goal attempts.
Closing Out the Victory
The Rouge et Or continued to pad their lead as the game progressed. Receiver Olivier Cool hauled in a touchdown reception, while backup quarterback Jeremy Ouellette added a rushing score to round out the offensive output.

The 37-15 final score marked the fourth edition of the Kia Match en blanc tradition, established in the years following the pandemic.
Looking Ahead to Week 2
The Rouge et Or will return to action on Sunday, September 7, hosting the Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or for the annual Match de la Rentrée Budweiser at Stade TELUS-Université Laval.
