NBA 2K27 places players closer to the action through the introduction of DLSS 5 3D-guided neural rendering, which is now available on GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware and through cloud streaming on GeForce NOW. Visual Concepts and NVIDIA released the technology to elevate the in-game experience closer to a live broadcast, bringing material depth, lighting realism, and facial geometry fidelity to PC and cloud platforms.

For more than 25 years, Visual Concepts has developed the NBA 2K franchise to mirror real-world sports broadcasts. The partnership with NVIDIA brings DLSS 5 3D-guided neural rendering directly into NBA 2K27 for players using GeForce RTX 50 Series PCs and laptops, as well as GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from NVIDIA-operated rigs powered by GeForce RTX 5080 GPUs in the cloud, according to NVIDIA.

Photorealism and Lighting Upgrades for Star Athletes

Visual Concepts utilized the new rendering pipeline to tune materials and lighting across the title. According to NVIDIA, DLSS 5 allows players to observe light passing naturally through athlete ears, realistic skin tones, and individual strands of hair while maintaining the precise facial geometry captured from real-world players.

According to NVIDIA, enabled DLSS 5 delivers lifelike warmth through enhanced skin subsurface scattering under arena lighting. It also introduces tighter contact shadows along the player’s neck and jersey collar, alongside natural light transmission that elevates hair definition.

Heavy Performance Costs on High-End Hardware

Initial technical analysis and benchmarking conducted by DSOGaming using an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D paired with 32GB of DDR5 memory and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 illustrate the performance cost of the new rendering tech. Testing across mid and close gameplay cameras, alongside the game’s Replay system, revealed that DLSS 5 produces a 50% to 60% drop in frame rates compared to native resolutions at maximum settings with ray tracing enabled.

At native 1080p with max settings and ray tracing, the test system recorded 180 frames per second without DLSS 5, dropping to 134 frames per second with the feature active. At native 1440p, framerates shifted from 176 frames per second down to 108 frames per second. At native 4K with max settings and ray tracing, the GeForce RTX 5090 maintained 63 frames per second with DLSS 5 enabled.

Framerate Viability and Replay Fidelity

While performance decreases significantly, testing indicates that base framerates remain above 60 frames per second at 4K on high-end hardware like the RTX 5090 even without Super Resolution or Frame Generation, mitigating major latency issues when utilizing multi-frame generation features.
