France has officially moved to abandon the centuries-old Mercator map projection in favor of the Eckert IV projection, aligning with a broader international movement led by the African Union and the Togo delegation at the United Nations. Announced by French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot on Friday, Sept. 4, at the opening of La Fabrique de la diplomatie in Paris, the policy shift seeks to replace geometric distortions that critics argue have long exaggerated the size of Western nations while shrinking the African continent, Latin America, and South Asia.
Why France Is Dropping the Mercator Map Projection
Designed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator, the traditional planispheric map was built primarily to aid maritime navigation. However, the projection stretches landmasses progressively as they move away from the equator, severely skewing global geography. According to geopolitical and cartographic analyses highlighted by Le Monde, Greenland appears roughly the same size as Africa on standard Mercator maps, despite Africa actually being about 14 times larger in reality.
By adopting the Eckert IV projection—named after German cartographer Max Eckert—Paris aims to correct these spatial imbalances. While the Eckert IV map reduces surface-area distortions for equatorial and southern regions, it renders higher-latitude areas such as Europe, the United States, and Russia noticeably smaller than they appear on traditional maps. The adjustment brings official French cartography closer to the Equal Earth projection advocated in a resolution tabled at the UN by Togo.
A Political and Diplomatic Shift in Global Representation
Speaking in Paris, Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized that cartography is not merely a technical exercise. “Our diplomacy must carry out two battles: carry our own narrative and always make sure to represent the world with accuracy,” Barrot said, as reported by Le Monde. He added that visual distortions eventually settle into public perception, making a correction necessary regarding how societies view size, power, and centrality.

The transition carries particular resonance for the African Union, which has long championed map reform to combat historical biases in international institutions. For many African member states, updating global maps is tied to broader demands for historical recognition and a more equitable standing in international governance alongside ongoing discussions concerning colonial-era legacies.
Practical Impacts on Schools and International Agencies
The pivot away from Mercator is expected to alter how geographic data is presented beyond government ministries. If the broader UN initiative succeeds, the new standards could reshape maps used in international agency reports, school textbooks, and global databases. While geometric solutions cannot perfectly flatten a spherical Earth without compromise, political and diplomatic bodies are increasingly opting for projections that prioritize proportional equity over European-centric navigation standards.
