The municipal administration of Crispiano, led by Mayor Luca Lopomo, championed the San Simone project to secure a permanent sporting legacy for the region. The new infrastructure serves a dual purpose. It provides an arena for the upcoming international events and establishes a permanent training ground designed to remain active long after the closing ceremony.

The San Simone venue is the first dedicated indoor and outdoor archery facility in the Puglia region, as well as the first facility in southern Italy homologated by the international federation for the discipline. This distinction positions the municipality of the Cento Masserie to host future national and international training camps, regional meets, and tournaments.

Capacity and Technical Specifications for Mediterranean Games

During the XX Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026, scheduled from August 21 to September 3, the venue will accommodate up to 1,000 spectators and operational staff through the deployment of additional modular seating. The shooting field is engineered to support a maximum concurrent rotation of 128 athletes during official competitions.

Architectural designs incorporate a practical flat roof layout overlooking the field, providing a dedicated working space for judges and media personnel equipped with shading and necessary furnishings, accessible via an external staircase. Beyond the archery events, the municipality of Crispiano will also feature prominently on August 24 when the men’s and women’s cycling pelotons race through the local territory.

Community Legacy and Regional Tourism Strategy

Local leaders intend to leverage the permanent infrastructure to drive sports tourism and economic activity across the provincial and regional communities. By partnering with regional and national sports federations, the municipal government plans to maintain a steady calendar of sporting events year-round, ensuring financial sustainability for the facility well beyond the conclusion of the 2026 Games.

The XX Mediterranean Games will bring over 4,000 athletes from 26 nations to the Taranto area. For Crispiano, the multi-sport event represents the culmination of a multi-year planning effort to secure a permanent role on the global sports stage and establish a hub for competitive archery in southern Italy.
