A routine recovery day inside the Texas Christian University football facility turned violent on August 13, 2026, when then-teammate Jacob Fields allegedly attacked wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. According to a signed arrest warrant affidavit obtained by law enforcement and media outlets, the altercation left the redshirt sophomore hospitalized for three days with severe head trauma.
The incident drew swift institutional action. University officials dismissed Fields from the Horned Frogs football program ahead of the season, and investigators subsequently secured an arrest warrant for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury as reported by sports outlets covering the case.
Locker Room Assault Details Emerge From Arrest Warrant
The confrontation unfolded at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time on August 13. Ezukanma was sitting in the men’s locker room looking at his phone following a recovery session when the Tarrant County arrest warrant affidavit states Fields approached him unprovoked.
Fields allegedly struck Ezukanma in the forehead with a closed fist, causing the wide receiver to fall to the floor. A witness inside the locker room told investigators that Fields then kicked Ezukanma in the head while he lay on the ground. Ezukanma later told campus police that he lost consciousness during the attack and only realized what had happened after regaining awareness in the training room, where teammates filled him in on the assault.
Investigators noted that Ezukanma reported intense head pain and severe headaches immediately following the incident. Jacob Fields, 21, is facing a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Fields was dismissed from the TCU football team and later turned himself in to the authorities, according to his agent. Following the attack, Ezukanma reported severe symptoms to the program’s athletic staff. Curtis Talley Jr., a sports trainer for the football team and referred to as CJ in the affidavit, drove Ezukanma to the emergency room after the athlete said his ears were ringing. Ezukanma sought medical attention at the school and a team doctor advised that he have a CT scan to make sure he didn’t have a brain bleed.
CJ told authorities that Ezukanma was given a CT scan at the hospital and the results came back saying he had a brain bleed, per the document. Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported that “TCU football player Dozie Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days because of a brain bleed, a concussion, and other injuries after allegedly being assaulted in the locker room by then-teammate Jacob Fields, according to a signed arrest warrant affidavit obtained by ABC affiliate WFAA in Dallas.”
Rittenberg further noted in his reporting, Ezukanma said he lost consciousness and only remembers being in the training room, where teammates told him what had happened.
Rittenberg added, The junior wide receiver told TCU's athletic trainer and team doctor that he had a severe headache and ringing ears, which resulted in a hospital visit where two CT scans confirmed a brain bleed.
Ezukanma was then transferred to the ICU and underwent a second scan, which showed the bleed had grown. Doctors then gave him blood pressure and pain control medications, according to the document. A third CT scan then showed that Ezukanma was stable. He was discharged from the hospital on Aug. 16, three days after the alleged incident.
Legal Proceedings and Team Impact
Campus police were initially not aware of the assault, nor were they dispatched to the training facility until a day after the alleged incident, when a reporting party wanted to relay information regarding an altercation that occurred in the men’s locker room on yesterday’s date. Fields was removed from the team well before the Week 0 matchup against North Carolina. He was arrested on an aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury charge after turning himself in, and he was eventually released later that day on a $50,000 bond.
Ezukanma did not participate in TCU’s 15-10 loss to the Tar Heels. His return to the field is currently unknown as he works his way back from the scary incident, and Fields is not signed with any team right now.
