Nvidia Corp. is rolling out DLSS 5 with 3D-guided neural rendering, launching its official debut in NBA 2K27 on September 3, according to an announcement from the tech manufacturer and developer Visual Concepts. The graphics upgrade aims to bridge the gap between virtual gameplay and televised broadcasts by altering how lighting and materials interact on digital athletes.
Launch Details and Hardware Requirements
Scheduled to drop at 9 p.m. Pacific Time on September 3, the technology will be available immediately for players running GeForce RTX 50 Series PCs and laptops. Cloud gamers subscribed to GeForce NOW Ultimate will also have access, utilizing NVIDIA-operated GeForce RTX 5080-powered gaming rigs.
Two Decades of Pursuing Authenticity
For more than two decades, Visual Concepts has built the NBA 2K franchise around authenticity, attempting to mimic real-world WNBA and NBA broadcasts. The implementation of DLSS 5 introduces several visual adjustments designed to preserve player likeness while pushing graphical boundaries.
“DLSS 3D-guided neural rendering helped boost the visual quality of our materials and lighting, bringing a real jump to photorealism across the game,” said Peter Kavic, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts, in an official company release.
Neural Rendering Alters Fine Details
The neural rendering framework alters fine details on player models. According to technical notes released alongside the announcement, players can observe light naturally passing through a player’s ears, realistic skin tones under arena lighting, and detailed light interactions on hair, all while keeping the exact facial geometry scanned from real athletes intact.

Subsurface Scattering on Marquee Athletes
Visual upgrades are particularly noticeable on marquee athletes. For instance, All-Star guard Cade Cunningham benefits from improved skin subsurface scattering, which provides lifelike warmth under arena lights. Tighter contact shadows emphasize details along his neck and jersey collar, while natural light transmission defines his hair texture.
