Verbal terms reached with player’s camp
Negotiations have progressed rapidly. A verbal agreement is already in place between FC Porto’s board of directors—known as the SAD dos dragões—and the player himself, as initially reported by Brazilian journalist Jeremias Wernek.
Final paperwork and administrative specifics are still being ironed out. Even so, the rising prospect is positioned to make the switch to European football following a productive run in his home country.
Recovery from a collapsed Shakhtar deal
The pursuit follows a turbulent previous transfer window where the teenager nearly secured a move to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
That prospective transfer, valued in the region of €12 million, ultimately collapsed during the final stages of talks. The setback left the midfielder to continue his development in Brazil.
Senior experience under Luís Castro
Domestically, the young playmaker has been heavily featured by Grêmio. Having come through the club’s youth academy, Gabriel Mec has logged 34 appearances for the senior team, contributing three goals and two assists.
Much of that exposure came under the guidance of manager Luís Castro, who utilized the midfielder in more than 30 matches throughout the 2026 season.
International pedigree and rival suitors
On the international stage, Gabriel Mec represents Brazil at the youth level. He featured prominently at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup, facing Portugal in the semi-finals of a competition that the Portuguese national selection ultimately won.
Interest in the teenager extends beyond Portugal. Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe also demonstrated interest in securing the attacking midfielder, according to sports outlet ge. However, FC Porto’s recent push has placed the Portuguese giants at the forefront of the race to complete a deal.
