Four intruders broke into the historic Cattedrale dei Santi Gregorio e Margherita in Ripatransone during the first evening of Thursday, making off with approximately 2,500 euros in cash donations intended for parish operations and local charitable work, according to local law enforcement reports.
The Festa della Petrella Diversion
The burglary occurred at around 21.20 local time while the town was busy hosting events for the annual Festa della Petrella. According to reconstructions provided by the Carabinieri, the four suspects gained entry to the cathedral through a lateral door before making their way directly to the sacristy.
Targeted Sacristy Looting and August Offerings
Investigators note that the stolen cash represented donations collected across the entire month of August. The total sum was notably higher than usual due to the recent celebration of two funerals in the days leading up to the break-in. During the raid, the perpetrators also damaged several sacred images inside the building.
Stripped Security Systems and External Footage
Beyond the monetary loss, the intruders targeted the security infrastructure of the church. The thieves removed the DVR unit that stored recordings from the internal security cameras, attempting to eliminate digital evidence of their movements inside the sanctuary.
However, external surveillance cameras captured the four men prior to their entry into the cathedral. Based on preliminary analysis of the footage, investigators estimate the suspects are men between the ages of 40 and 50. The Carabinieri have seized the external video files and are actively working to identify the individuals involved.
Caritas Branch and Community Aftermath
The stolen funds served a vital role in daily parish administration, covering routine maintenance, utility bills, and basic operating expenses. A portion of the collected offerings is routinely allocated to support 27 local families assisted by the Duomo’s Caritas branch.

The incident has hit the community hard, targeting one of the primary historical and religious landmarks in Ripatransone. The Cathedral of Saints Gregory and Margaret stands as a central architectural and spiritual reference point for the city, leaving residents and church administrators shaken as the investigation into the stolen funds continues.
Forensic Trace and Ongoing Manhunt
Carabinieri authorities are continuing their forensic review of the external video footage to trace the suspects’ escape route and vehicle information. Parish officials expect to provide further updates to the community as local authorities progress toward identifying the four individuals captured on camera.
