Johanna Konta Claims Roger Federer’s Hall of Fame Induction Feels ‘Pointless

Former British number one Johanna Konta has described Roger Federer’s upcoming induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame as “almost pointless” due to the sheer magnitude of his legacy, suggesting the Swiss maestro’s legendary stature already transcends the Newport institution.

Flushing Meadows Return Precedes Newport Enshrinement

Federer, who has generated considerable buzz at the US Open this year, is scheduled to head to Newport, Rhode Island, following his appearances at Flushing Meadows. He is entering the prestigious Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, alongside WTA Tour icon Mary Carillo. His return to Arthur Ashe Stadium earlier during the US Open’s opening week marked his first time at the tournament since 2019, featuring a practice session with Lorenzo Musetti and a set alongside Andy Roddick.

Inevitability Outshines the Hall of Fame Honor

Speaking to TNT Sports, Konta explained that Federer’s impending enshrinement felt entirely inevitable long before any official paperwork was filed. “It feels like he’s already in it. Do you know what I mean? It almost feels pointless because it’s so obvious that it almost doesn’t seem real,” Konta said.

Celebrating a Bygone Era of Dominance

While acknowledging the nostalgic weight of seeing clips of Federer tying his bandana at the US Open, Konta noted that the honor primarily serves to celebrate an era that has passed. “It’s important because it celebrates something that’s gone. But again, I think in the context of someone like Roger, it almost feels pointless just because I feel like he was – and, to be fair, Rafa and Novak – it feels like they are already in the Hall of Fame while they were actively playing,” she added.

A Proposal for Collective Rivalry Recognition

During the same interview, Konta proposed a collective enshrinement for Federer alongside his rivals, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Between them, the trio captured 66 Grand Slam titles during one of the most impressive eras the sport has ever seen.

“They have their own separate ones, but then a joint one, because what was unbelievable, it wasn’t just their individual careers, it was how they had their careers alongside each other,” Konta said. “That’s what made the whole thing incredible, because Roger on his own would have still been spectacular and special, but it would have not been as emotional, as massive, as engrossing if Rafa wasn’t having the same alongside him, and then Novak joining alongside them.”

Post-Retirement Milestones in Newport

Federer’s induction ceremony in Newport marks the next official milestone as he continues his engagement with the sport.
