Inter Miami has officially named Cristian “Kily” González as the club’s new head coach, according to multiple club and media announcements. González, 52, takes over the managerial reins from Guillermo Hoyos, stepping in to guide Lionel Messi and the rest of the squad as the franchise navigates the remainder of the Major League Soccer season.
A New Direction for Inter Miami
According to official club communications, González will officially assume his technical duties once his work permits are approved. The appointment follows a period of transition on the touchline for the Florida club, which parted ways with Javier Mascherano earlier in the season before Hoyos took charge on an interim and then permanent basis.
Inter Miami turned to González following a tough stretch of form. The team dropped four of its last five matches across all competitions, including a recent 2-1 defeat against Toronto FC at Nu Stadium. Despite that dip in momentum, the team remains second in the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points, trailing table-leaders Nashville.
Coaching Pedigree and Argentine Roots
González arrives in MLS with prior managerial experience in Argentine football. He has previously managed Rosario Central, Unión, and el Marrón, and last coached at Platense in November 2025. This move to Florida marks the first time González will manage a club outside of Argentina.
His hiring continues a trend for Inter Miami since Messi’s arrival in South Florida. The franchise has consistently relied on Argentine managers, starting with Gerardo “Tata” Martino, followed by Javier Mascherano, the brief interim spell by Guillermo Hoyos, and now González. The incoming coach also shares a personal connection with Messi, having been among the first to greet the star forward at his home in Rosario after Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup victory.

The immediate task for González involves stabilizing a roster that has battled injuries throughout the campaign. Inter Miami aims to reclaim the form that led to last season’s MLS triumph, alongside previous successes under Messi that include a Leagues Cup title and a Supporters’ Shield.
