Brussels has unveiled its official plans for the redesign of the Nieuwe Graanmarkt. The project transforms the central urban square into a green, multi-functional community hub featuring an innovative shaded canopy structure described by local officials as a “midnight sun.”

Brussels alderwoman for Urbanism and Public Space Anaïs Maes presented the comprehensive redevelopment blueprint on Tuesday. She outlined a vision aimed at creating an inviting and versatile gathering space where visitors experience security and accessibility.
Preserving Every Established Tree On-Site
According to municipal plans detailed by Maes, the redesigned square prioritizes environmental sustainability and expanded recreational space while strictly protecting existing flora.
All 60 established trees currently on the Nieuwe Graanmarkt will remain untouched throughout the construction process. Crews will plant 16 additional trees across the site to bolster urban canopy coverage. The layout introduces interconnected zones featuring natural grass beds and diverse plantings, softening the hardscape footprint of the plaza. Officials combined this targeted greening strategy with open paved areas designed for public seating, ensuring pedestrians retain ample room to circulate.
Modern Benches, Ping-Pong, and Hoops
The urban renewal project incorporates extensive new furniture to encourage daily community use.
Workers will install modern benches, communal tables, and tiered seating structures positioned deliberately around existing tree roots. A newly designed canopy roof will provide weather protection for outdoor gatherings. Athletic infrastructure forms a core component of the layout, highlighted by the complete retention and renovation of the existing basketball court. Maes confirmed that the basketball facility will receive modern equipment upgrades tailored to accommodate both amateur newcomers and experienced players.
Additional recreational amenities include dedicated swing sets, integrated drinking water fountains, outdoor ping-pong tables, and formal petanque courts alongside open play zones.

City officials have not yet announced an exact groundbreaking date or a final construction timeline for the Nieuwe Graanmarkt overhaul.
