Tungurahua secured a second-place finish in the mixed archery team event during the XIII Juegos Nacionales Prejuveniles Azuay 2026, anchoring a strong provincial medal haul at the Universidad de Cuenca fields in Ecuador, according to regional sports reports.
Gabriel Valdiviezo Leads Tungurahua’s Archery Campaign
The provincial delegation’s success in Azuay was spearheaded by Ambato archer Gabriel Valdiviezo, who claimed the individual gold medal in the Olympic Round.
Building on his individual performance, Valdiviezo partnered with Krystin Rodríguez in the mixed team division. The duo combined for a silver medal after displaying a coordinated rhythm on the shooting line. Valdiviezo also secured a bronze medal in the qualification round, completing a three-medal performance that underscored Tungurahua’s competitive depth in youth archery.
Azuay Dominates Home Terrain in Compound and Mixed Events
In the men’s compound classification, Azuay swept the top positions. Matías Ávila secured the gold medal with a total of 674 points, followed by teammate Julián Jumbo with 667 points for silver, and Juan Pérez taking bronze with 659 points. In the women’s compound competition, Sofía Contreras claimed gold with 660 points, edging out Guayas competitor Danna Navarrete on a tiebreaker after both finished with identical scores. Dariana Heredia of Azuay rounded out the podium with the bronze medal by scoring 658 points.
Mixed Team Standings and Competition Schedule
Azuay added a third gold medal in the mixed team category, where the pairing of Matías Ávila and Sofía Contreras totaled 1,334 points to finish ahead of the competition. Guayas placed second in the mixed standings, while Pichincha secured the third position on the podium.
The youth national games archery competitions continued with subsequent team classification events, giving provinces additional opportunities to alter the final medal standings before the conclusion of the tournament.
