Loh Kean Yew Reflects on Pressure After Singapore Badminton Open Defeat to Alex Lanier

Final Match Dynamics at the Singapore Badminton Event

“I knew that I needed to fight crazy hard, I needed determination and I think I lost a little bit of myself in the second set,” Lanier said.

Lanier described his mindset when the momentum threatened to shift. “At that moment I just thought I cannot let him come back so easily. And I went 100 per cent, and even more, with determination, resilience. I went point after point, and I think that was definitely the key,” he explained.

Loh Kean Yew’s Path to the Final and Local Support

To reach the championship match, Loh had to navigate a grueling schedule that tested his endurance. He eked out demanding victories over India’s Srikanth Kidambi and H S Prannoy in the round-of-16, before overcoming Chi Yu-jen. Notably, all three of those early encounters required a deciding third game.

Loh advanced to Sunday’s final by defeating Japan’s Koki Watanabe with a 21-15, 15-21, 21-9 scoreline on Saturday. “Every year a lot of the Singapore crowd come to watch Singapore players play. Sometimes I feel very sayang (regretful) that I lose before (they can come and watch),” Loh said.

Reflecting on his tournament run, Loh expressed satisfaction with his performance despite the final outcome. “This year I came through all the way, till the last day. I’m glad that I did that, even though I lost,” he noted.

Broader Context and Internal Expectations

Badminton is more popular in many parts of Asia compared with France, so there may not be as much external expectations than internal expectations for players navigating these high-pressure international circuits.
