According to reports from Nippon Professional Baseball officials, the governing body formally unveiled the updated rules governing the Climax Series Final Stage, slated to take effect starting in the 2026 postseason. Under the revised framework, the league will introduce a maximum seven-game series requiring five wins to advance, alongside an automatic two-game advantage awarded to the regular-season pennant winner under two distinct scenarios.
The updated regulations stipulate that the modified seven-game format and two-win head start will trigger if the regular-season game differential between the first-place club and the First Stage winner reaches 10 games or more. Alternatively, the same conditions apply if the First Stage winner finishes the regular season with a sub-.500 winning percentage. In either scenario, the top-seeded club begins the Final Stage with two wins already on the board, leaving both teams to battle until one side reaches five total victories.
Additional contingencies address scheduling constraints and weather interruptions. According to league announcements, if a tie occurs or if cancellations prevent the completion of scheduled games—even after utilizing designated reserve days—without either club reaching five wins, the series victor will be decided by total wins, which explicitly factors in the top-seeded team’s two-game starting advantage.
The organizational body also released the official calendar for the upcoming postseason schedule. The First Stage is set to begin on October 10 with Game 1, followed by Game 2 on October 11 and Game 3 on October 12, with October 13 designated as a reserve day. All First Stage matchups will be hosted at the home stadium of the second-place club.
Following the opening round, the Final Stage gets underway at the home venue of the regular-season champion. Game 1 is scheduled for October 14, followed by Game 2 on October 15, Game 3 on October 16, Game 4 on October 17, Game 5 on October 18, and Game 6 on October 19. If necessary, Game 7 is slated for October 20, with October 21 serving as the ultimate reserve day for the Final Stage. In scenarios where the series remains a standard six-game format, October 20 functions directly as the primary reserve day.
