Marcel Tugulea spends his weekends locking arms in traditional Swiss wrestling rings, a world away from where his athletic life began. The 27-year-old truck driver lives in Stalden, Valais, with his wife, Corina, and their two daughters, Ilinca and Maya. But his path to the Swiss Alps spans a rigorous upbringing in Moscow and law enforcement service in Moldova, according to reporting by Blick.

The Brutal Realities of Moscow’s Training Culture
Growing up in the Russian capital, Tugulea’s daily routine was dictated by his father, a former judoka. As Blick notes, Tugulea often spent an hour and a half commuting across Moscow just to reach practice.

His development accelerated inside a sports boarding school governed by a strict hierarchy enforced by older students. Training conditions were severe. Roughly 20 young athletes practiced in a 30-square-meter basement equipped with neither running water, toilets, nor showers, according to Blick. “At some point, thirst took over disgust,” Tugulea recalled.
Coaches drilled a single organizational mantra into the trainees: “The only valid excuse for missing a training session is being dead.”
Anti-Terrorist Units and Life in Moldova
Tugulea’s trajectory shifted when his younger brother faced severe health challenges. The family relocated to Moldova, his mother’s home country, while his father remained in Moscow for work in the construction sector.
In Moldova, Tugulea established himself in the national judo elite. He subsequently joined the police force, eventually earning a position in an anti-terrorist unit. Reporting by Blick notes that he remains selective about details from this chapter, describing operations that targeted both dangerous criminals and individuals selling illicit goods out of economic desperation.
A Fresh Start in the Swiss Alps
Despite stability in law enforcement, economic conditions in Moldova prompted Tugulea to seek a fresh start abroad. According to Blick, full-time wages averaged roughly 600 euros net per month, while utility and heating expenses consumed a significant portion of household income during winter months.
Motivated by stories from an acquaintance living in Valais, Tugulea packed his bags in May 2022 and moved to Valais. He spent his initial six months living in a caravan before reuniting with his family in Stalden.
Today, he works as a professional truck driver while bringing his lifetime of combat skills into the traditional Swiss sport of wrestling.
