New York Yankees left-hander Ryan Weathers exited a Saturday game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth inning due to left forearm discomfort. Weathers, who is scheduled for imaging on Sunday, walked off the mound with a team trainer after delivering a pitch to Myles Straw.
The New York Yankees faced another medical setback on Saturday afternoon during a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium, as starting pitcher Ryan Weathers left the contest in the fourth inning. Weathers was pulled from his outing with one out and two runners on base during an at-bat against Myles Straw, per a team announcement.
Weathers Exits After High-Stress Outing Against Toronto
Before his departure, Weathers labored through the afternoon, throwing 72 pitches to record just 10 outs as Toronto threatened to break open a tight game. MLB.com reported that the left-hander walked off the mound alongside an athletic trainer after tossing an 0-1 delivery to Straw. Relief pitcher Yerry De los Santos inherited the jam and managed to escape the frame without further scoring, closing Weathers’ final pitching line at 3.1 innings with two runs allowed on eight hits and three strikeouts. George Springer and Charles McAdoo stroked run-scoring hits off Weathers.
The injury halts a breakout stretch for the 26-year-old southpaw. Weathers had compiled a 1.94 ERA over his previous seven starts dating back to July 10, establishing himself as a reliable anchor in the Yankees rotation. Prior to Saturday, he had set career highs with 143 strikeouts across 137 1/3 innings and 25 total appearances, bringing his overall season ERA to 3.60. The Yankees landed Weathers in an offseason trade with the Marlins, sending a package of four prospects to secure the left-hander.
Rotation Depth Tested Amid Ongoing Injury Concerns
The timing of the injury compounds existing stress on New York’s pitching depth. The Yankees are already navigating the absence of Max Fried, who is sidelined with a left elbow bone bruise. Fried tossed a bullpen session on Saturday and could be activated in the minimum 15 days, but the uncertain status of Weathers leaves rotation plans fluid. There had been speculation that once starters were fully healthy or when Fried returned, either Weathers or Will Warren would have been ticketed for the bullpen.

You never want significant pieces to go down, but that's part of it. We're throwing the ball really well and expect to continue to do that — if this creates an opportunity in the short term, we've had guys step up all year and we'll need to do it again.
Aaron Boone, Yankees manager
Starting pitching has been one of the Yankees’ biggest strengths as they aim to catch the division-leading Rays in the American League East race, despite injuries to key stars like Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton. The day began with the news that Giancarlo Stanton had injured his left calf, likely ending his season. Meanwhile, captain Aaron Judge continues to make progress in his rehabilitation.
Diagnostic Imaging Scheduled for Sunday
The diagnosis remains preliminary as the club awaits formal results. Weathers is slated to undergo imaging on Sunday, the team announced, to evaluate the severity of the forearm issue. Weathers felt sharp pain after throwing a sweeper to Toronto outfielder Myles Straw, immediately stepping off the rubber to signal catcher Austin Wells and the training staff before being pulled from the game.

Because Weathers has a checkered injury history—including forearm and lat issues that limited him to eight starts last season, alongside a finger injury that sidelined him for two and a half months in 2024—the club’s medical staff is conducting a thorough evaluation to rule out structural damage and gauge the severity of the issue. With Saturday’s outing, Weathers had already passed his previous career high in innings, having entered the start at 134 frames across 24 starts, surpassing his previous professional high of 137 1/3 innings split between the Padres and Marlins in 2023.
