“We have an agreement in principle with Patrick Vieira,” Cissé explained, before adding that both sides are still “pursuing negotiations regarding the legal conditions.”

Until all contractual clauses are fully validated, a reversal remains theoretically possible. According to reports covering the announcement, the federation’s media team released visual assets proclaiming Vieira as the new manager before the paperwork was entirely locked down.

Adding to the uncertainty, Vieira has maintained a quiet public posture regarding the position. During a family trip to Senegal that included a safari at the Bandia reserve, the former Arsenal captain posted photos on Instagram accompanied by the caption “Lions de la Teranga.”

However, the images featured actual big cats rather than members of the national football team led by Sadio Mané, leaving the post open to interpretation. Vieira subsequently visited Cape Verde—the birthplace of his grandfather—without issuing any personal confirmation of a finalized contract with the FSF.

Financial Compromise and Staff Autonomy Debates

The path to even reaching a verbal agreement proved complicated. Initial discussions involved a wide gap in financial expectations.

Vieira reportedly sought a monthly salary approaching 100,000 euros. The two sides eventually compromised on approximately 35 million FCFA per month, representing a little more than half of his initial demand.

Debates also reportedly surfaced within the federation concerning the composition of his coaching staff and the degree of autonomy Vieira would be granted, after initial pushes for total independence met resistance from executive committee members.
