Nick Chubb Retires From NFL After Eight Seasons at Age 30

Four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday at age 30, closing out an eight-year career defined by elite rushing efficiency and grueling recoveries from multiple knee and foot injuries.

An Elite Rushing Legacy and Rare Efficiency Milestones

Nick Chubb exits professional football as part of a historic group of running backs. Selected 35th overall by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Chubb finished his career with 7,349 rushing yards on 1,462 carries, averaging 5.03 yards per carry across 100 games.

That output places him alongside only three other players in NFL history who recorded at least 1,000 carries and maintained a career average above five yards per carry. Jim Brown, who played for the Browns from 1957 to 1965, retired with 12,312 yards on 2,359 carries for an average of 5.22 yards per carry. Joe Perry, who began his career with the 49ers when they were part of the All-America Football Conference in 1948 and played 14 seasons in San Francisco plus another two seasons with the Baltimore Colts, retired with 9,723 yards on 1,929 carries, averaging 5.04 yards per carry. Jamaal Charles, who played for the Chiefs from 2008 to 2016 and briefly for the Broncos and Jaguars before retiring after the 2018 season, retired with 7,563 yards on 1,407 carries and a 5.38 yards per carry average that stands as the best of any running back with at least 1,000 carries in NFL history.

Chubb burst onto the scene as a rookie with the Browns, amassing 1,145 scrimmage yards and 10 scores. He built on that first-year breakout with four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 2019 to 2022, which earned him four consecutive Pro Bowl selections. His peak came in 2022 when he posted a career-high 1,525 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, earning him second-team All-Pro honors. He follows the past greatness of exceptional running backs associated with the Browns such as Jim Brown, Kevin Mack, Marion Motley, Greg Pruitt, Leroy Kelly, Ernie Green, Earnest Byner, Dub Jones, and Bobby Mitchell.

Overcoming Major Injuries From College to the Pros

While Chubb’s early production mirrored a standout trajectory, physical setbacks altered the final chapters of his career. The first grueling rehab came after he suffered a devastating knee injury in 2015 at Georgia. A stellar career seemingly ended for Nick Chubb after that catastrophic injury in 2023, but one of the NFL’s most dominant running backs refused to go out like that at age 28. He tore both his MCL, meniscus, and ACL in 2023 after a gruesome knee injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 that year, necessitating a second grueling rehab.

Chubb returned to action in Week 7 of the 2024 season with Cleveland before suffering another season-ending injury in Week 15 that year against the Kansas City Chiefs, this time a foot fracture. He was a shell of himself in 2025 with the Houston Texans after the second significant lower body injury as he rushed for just 506 yards and 3 touchdowns on 122 carries. Every Cleveland Browns fan can remember where they were when the Houston Texans announced that they had signed running back Nick Chubb, which marked a sad day in Northeast Ohio. Chubb began the 2025 season as Houston’s lead running back, but his snaps became more limited as the season rolled along, and eventually fourth-round rookie Woody Marks surpassed him, leaving Chubb with just nine starts and 326 offensive snaps, or 32% of all offensive plays. He called it quits while remaining a free agent two weeks into the 2026 preseason.

Dealing with injuries was something else that wasn't part of the plan, Chubb said. The only thing I could control after hurting my knee twice was getting back up, getting back to work, and getting back on the field. And I was able to do that both times.

Stepping Away on His Own Terms

Chubb on Friday night announced what he himself knew was inevitable years ago: He is done. A large portion of Chubb’s retirement announcement, which spanned five different slides on Instagram, dealt with his recovery, as well as the importance of health walking away from football.

Today's the day I've been avoiding for a while, Chubb wrote in a farewell missive on Instagram. Twelve-year-old me could never imagine this day, and 30-year-old me is wondering where all the time has gone.

I've known for some time now, but I'm finally ready to share that I'm done playing football, Chubb added. I wanted to end my career on a healthy note, along with a winning season, and I was able to do that.

Reflecting on his journey, the four-time Pro Bowler emphasized perspective regarding physical well-being after football.

There's a life waiting for you after football, too, Chubb added later. And health is the real wealth. I end my career in a great place.

He finishes his career with 7,349 rushing yards, 1,109 receiving yards, and 59 touchdowns in 100 career games.
