Italian Judo Champion Returns Home to Italy After Severe Crash in Moldova

Francesco, a 17-year-old resident of Sarezzo in the province of Brescia, has been transferred to the Niguarda Hospital in Milan following a severe traffic accident in Moldova, according to regional authorities. The young man arrived via a sanitary flight coordinated by AREU (Azienda Regionale Emergenza Urgenza) to continue a complex medical recovery close to his family.

Emergency Transfer Coordinates Regional Response

The operation to bring the teenager back to Lombardy moved swiftly once medical clearance was established. Regional Welfare Assessor Guido Bertolaso and Education, Training and Labour Assessor Simona Tironi visited the Niguarda facility alongside Sarezzo Mayor Valentina Pedrali to check on the young competitor and meet with his family.

“As soon as we were informed of the accident, thanks also to the report from the mayor and Assessor Tironi, we immediately activated the regional emergency-urgency system,” Bertolaso explained in a statement reported by regional media. Medical personnel in Lombardy maintained direct contact with physicians treating the teenager in Moldova, arranging the repatriation flight as soon as his condition permitted travel.

A Complex Recovery Path Ahead

While the air transfer marks a crucial milestone, healthcare providers emphasize that the rehabilitation process will demand considerable time and specialized care. Tironi noted during the hospital visit that the young man faces an intricate medical roadmap.

“We worked in record time to bring Francesco home and allow him to continue his treatment path near his family,” Tironi stated. “I found an extremely strong, athletic, and motivated young man. The path that awaits him will still be long and complex, but I want to tell him that Lombardy is with him.”

Community Support and Next Steps

The incident has drawn widespread attention across the Brescia community and the wider Lombardy region, with numerous individuals offering support to the family despite not knowing the teenager personally. The local administration in Sarezzo, led by Mayor Pedrali, continues to coordinate closely with regional agencies to support the family throughout the hospitalization.
