Pierre Sallet, head of the French firm Goodgame—which investigates match manipulation for sports clubs and governing bodies—examined the television broadcast and concluded that the displayed 3D graphic featuring the green offside line diverges from a precise 1:1 translation of the actual player positions.
Technical Discrepancies and Vertical Distortion
According to Sallet’s analysis, the FIFA graphic contained notable shifts in player body arrangement, the arm positioning of Argentina defender Nehuén Pérez (referenced in source reports as Paredes), and the boot color of Torres. Furthermore, Sallet identified an uncalculated optical effect termed “vertical distortion.” While horizontal adjustments were factored into the system, the vertical plane was not similarly calibrated, meaning Goodgame’s measured offside line did not match the line displayed on the official FIFA broadcast.
Tobias Weber, an astronomer who has previously studied semi-automated offside systems, also reviewed the available footage. Weber stated that, based on the images provided to him, the sequence did not constitute an offside position. These findings are compounded by operational delays during the match; referee Slavko Vinčić made an immediate ruling, and while the VAR review confirmed the call, FIFA’s broadcast feed required approximately four minutes to produce the graphic for television audiences, with a delay of roughly three minutes before it appeared on the stadium’s giant screens.
Transparency and System Limitations
Semi-automated offside technology relies on tracking data and automated ball sensors, but human operators within the VAR booth retain the ability to manually adjust the kick-off frame if automated markers appear imprecise.
