According to reports from the New York Post, the 35-year-old right-hander allowed just four hits and issued zero walks while throwing 79 pitches, continuing his careful ramp-up following Tommy John surgery.
The outing marked Cole’s second major league start since returning to the active roster, building on a six-scoreless-inning debut against the Tampa Bay Rays. Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised the precision of the pitcher’s outing, describing the performance as surgical in the visiting clubhouse after the sweep.
“Feel like maybe the first game was a little appetizer and that was the main course right there,” Boone said, according to the New York Post. “That was surgical.”
Pound-the-Zone Command and Fastball Velocity
Cole relied on sharp command throughout the night, reaching 98 mph with his fastball for a called strikeout in the fifth inning. Unlike his season debut against Tampa Bay, where he walked three batters, Cole limited his deep counts significantly against Kansas City. Records show he worked into only two three-ball counts all evening—first falling behind 3-0 to Bobby Witt Jr. in the fourth inning before inducing a popup, and later going to a full count against Carter Jensen in the seventh before a similar result.
The efficient pitch pacing allowed Cole to navigate deep into the game despite a strict pitch limit. Reflecting on his physical progress during the post-game media session, Cole maintained a cautious perspective on his early-season workload.
“I think it’s coming along,” Cole said, as quoted by the New York Post. “There’s still some stuff to work on, absolutely, going forward. But with what we had tonight, I thought we used it really well.”
Offensive Support and Defensive Highlights
The Yankees backed their starting pitcher with consistent run production, highlighted by multi-hit games from Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice, and Ryan McMahon. Rice opened the scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI triple before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge. Rice extended the lead in the seventh with a two-run single, and McMahon capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the eighth.
Defensively, Judge preserved the shutout in the third inning by fielding a single off the bat of Maikel Garcia and throwing out Michael Massey at home plate.
