Jannik Sinner withdraws from Flushing Meadows
World tennis number one Jannik Sinner has confirmed he will miss the US Open due to a lingering right knee injury, halting his Grand Slam campaign ahead of the hard-court major in New York. According to reports from European sports outlets, the Italian player made the announcement public via social media, stating that despite intensive work with his team and medical staff, he requires more time to recover following trials on the courts in Monte Carlo.
Wimbledon triumph followed by physical toll
Sinner has not competed in an official event since capturing the Wimbledon title in July, where he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev 3-1 in the final. During that championship match, the player from San Candido sustained the knee injury that has now sidelined him from the final Grand Slam of the season.
Monte Carlo trials force difficult announcement
«Although I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,» Sinner wrote in his announcement. «We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my injury in my right knee.»
A rare Grand Slam absence on the ATP Tour
Sinner will miss a Grand Slam event for the first time since Wimbledon 2020. Having limited his schedule to just six tournaments across the current season, the reigning world number one expressed sharp disappointment regarding his absence from the New York venue.
«I am very sad and disappointed, as New York ocupa un lugar especial en mi corazón (occupies a special place in my heart),» the five-time major champion stated, noting his desire to play in front of the tournament’s spectators. His lone previous US Open series victory stands among his five Grand Slam titles.
Carlos Alcaraz returns to defend New York crown
While the men’s tournament loses its top seed, the draw will welcome back Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. The world number two confirmed his return to competitive play following an absence caused by a right wrist injury that sidelined him after the Conde de Godó tournament. Alcaraz enters New York prepared to defend the 2,000 ranking points he earned by capturing the 2025 US Open title.

The US Open main draw gets underway on hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, running from August 30 through September 13.
