Basketball world champion Dennis Schröder is set to join the Sacramento Kings on a three-year contract worth $45 million, according to reports by ESPN and the German Press Agency. The 31-year-old guard moves to his tenth NBA franchise after splitting the previous season across multiple teams.
A New Chapter in Sacramento for Dennis Schröder
The deal brings stability to Schröder following a turbulent campaign that saw him play for the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons. According to the German Press Agency, Schröder held extensive discussions with Sacramento decision-makers before agreeing to terms. “I spoke with them several times and feel very comfortable with everything they brought up,” Schröder told the news agency, noting that he looks forward to embracing the fresh challenge.
The three-year pact carries a total value of $45 million (approximately €38.3 million), as first reported by ESPN. While the Sacramento front office has not yet issued a formal transaction confirmation, the terms establish the veteran playmaker in Northern California for the foreseeable future.
Filling the Void Left by De’Aaron Fox
Sacramento targeted Schröder to plug a significant backcourt gap created by the departure of De’Aaron Fox, who moved to the San Antonio Spurs. The Kings franchise has experienced historic struggles to sustain postseason success, enduring a playoff drought from 2006 to 2022 and failing to reach an NBA Finals series since winning their lone championship in 1951.
Schröder arrives in Sacramento with deep playoff experience, having finished the prior season with the Detroit Pistons and reaching the opening round against the New York Knicks, where Detroit fell 2:4. While Schröder acknowledged he would have welcomed a longer stay in Detroit, roster dynamics and financial considerations steered him elsewhere. “It would have been great to stay in Detroit, of course, but the situation changes a bit when Jaden Ivey is back on the floor,” Schröder noted to the German Press Agency. “And the financial side simply wasn’t where Sacramento is. Difficult, but that’s how it is. It’s a business.”
A Decade of Journeys Across the NBA
The move to Sacramento marks the tenth different NBA stop for the German national team captain. Since entering the league, Schröder has played for the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons.
Before his debut with the Kings tips off in the autumn, Schröder will shift his focus to international competition. He will captain the German national team at the upcoming European Championship, running from August 27 to September 14. Germany plays its preliminary round matches in Tampere, Finland, while the knockout phase takes place in Riga, Latvia, positioning the reigning world champions among the tournament favorites alongside rising star Franz Wagner.
