British Cyclist Finlay Tarling Dies After Being Hit by Wrong-Way Driver During Volta a Portugal

The 87th Volta a Portugal was plunged into profound mourning after 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling died during the eighth stage following a collision with a delivery van traveling in the opposite direction of the race route. According to the Jornal de Notícias, the fatal crash occurred on the EN306 as Tarling rode behind the main peloton while representing the Swiss development squad NSN Development Team.

Emergency responders arrived quickly following the impact. Carlos Lima, commander of the Ponte de Lima Volunteer Firefighters, confirmed to the press that the light goods vehicle was driving from Ponte de Lima toward Paredes de Coura while the stage was actively running in the opposite direction, from Paredes de Coura toward Ponte de Lima.
