At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, French runner Alice Finot secured the silver medal in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes and 14.24 seconds, finishing behind Germany’s Gesa Felicitas Krause.
Race Dynamics and the Decisive Final Lap
The race unfolded at a rapid pace on Thursday evening, with Finot maintaining a position within the lead group from the start. According to race reports, the French competitor deliberately allowed the German athletes to dictate the tempo during the opening half of the competition. A significant split in the field soon created a clear separation, leaving an elite group of eight runners to contest the podium spots.
Alongside Finot, two other French finalists competed in the race: Clara Entresangle and Flavie Renouard. Entresangle navigated the pack from the rear following a fall in the semifinals, while Renouard maintained close contact with the leading runners. As the pace intensified on the final lap, Entresangle and Renouard ultimately lost ground against the leaders. In the closing stretch, German runner Meyer fell during the final water jump, leaving Krause to claim the gold medal while Finot crossed the finish line to secure the silver.
Reflections from the Podium Contender
Speaking to France TV following the race, Finot described a turbulent and highly competitive environment on the track. “The race passed quickly, a lot happened, and we received quite a few kicks from the front and back,” Finot said. “We sensed the excitement between us, and there were many possible scenarios because it was quite open. I had told myself one of the scenarios was to run fast and hold on until the end. I felt the efforts at the end were costly, and I am very proud of my second place because I couldn’t go any faster.”
Overcoming a Challenging Post-Olympic Season
The silver medal marks Finot’s second major outdoor European medal, following her continental victory in Rome two years prior. At 35 years old, the French athlete returned to the international podium after navigating a difficult post-Olympic phase. Finot missed the World Championships in Tokyo due to a persistent calf injury. Based in Vigo, Spain, since 2016, the former automotive engineer successfully re-established her competitive form on the international stage in Birmingham.
