Defending champion Angelica Moser secured her place in the pole vault final, overcoming an early-season injury scare to clear 4.50 meters on her first attempt, according to reports from La Liberté and EuropeSays.
Qualification Round Confirms Contender Status
The preliminary session confirmed Moser among the primary contenders for the title, despite a challenging buildup marked by physical rehabilitation. Six other competitors joined the Swiss athlete in clearing the 4.50-meter barrier during Tuesday’s preliminary session. However, the field saw a notable elimination when Slovenian vaulter Tina Sutej failed to clear the height, removing a central rival from the upcoming medal round.
Overcoming Training Accident and Right Foot Injury
Moser arrives at the final as a two-time European indoor champion with a strong track record in major competitions. Her path to the defense of her crown required intensive medical recovery following an accident. According to field reports, Moser had previously claimed a competition victory at 4.77 meters before attempting 4.90 meters with a rigid pole. Changing wind conditions caught her off guard during that attempt, causing her to land near the edge of the safety mat and injure her right foot.
Intensive Therapy Yields Clean Qualification
The subsequent intensive therapy enabled her to return to competitive form in time for the qualifying session. While Moser advanced cleanly on her first try at 4.50 meters, compatriot Lea Bachmann from Basel fell just short of 4.40 meters and exited the competition after clearing 4.25 meters.
Spitz Misses 400-Meter Final by Narrow Margin
In concurrent events during the qualification program, Swiss sprinter Lionel Spitz narrowly missed a spot in the men’s 400-meter final. The Zurich native clocked 45.34 seconds, marking his fastest time of the season, but the performance proved just sufficient to keep him out of the title race.
Final Round Preparations Underway
Moser will now prepare for the final round as one of the focal points of the athletics schedule. Official updates regarding start lists and competition schedules are managed through the main event organizers and continental athletics governing bodies.
