Austrian tennis has secured fresh representation in the main draw of the WTA-1000 tournament in Cincinnati. Lilli Tagger and Sinja Kraus successfully navigated their qualifying matches under grueling weather conditions.
Straight-Set Victories Over American Opponents
The 18-year-old Tagger entered the qualifying tournament as the top seed. She booked her place in the 128-player main draw with a 6:3, 6:1 victory over American player Robin Montgomery.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old compatriot Sinja Kraus joined her. Kraus defeated another local competitor, Claire Liu, with a 6:4, 6:3 scoreline in their second-round qualifying fixture.
A Near-15-Hour Ordeal of Rain Delays
Both players had to endure a turbulent schedule at the venue. Prolonged rain delays stretched an already demanding match day into a nearly 15-hour ordeal.
According to tournament accounts, Tagger and Kraus spent hours waiting on site for weather conditions to clear before they could step onto the court.
Players Reflect on Exhausting Schedule
“It was a wild day, a long wait,” Tagger reflected on the interrupted schedule. “Such days are part of it, and when you win matches like that, you can be even more proud.”
Kraus echoed those sentiments regarding the stamina required to get through the qualifying rounds. “I was on the grounds at 8:30, and now it is 23:00. It was difficult,” Kraus stated.
Main Draw Ceremony and Potential Austrian Clash
With the qualifying rounds concluding, tournament organizers prepared for the official main-draw ceremony. The schedule leaves open the possibility of an all-Austrian matchup in the opening rounds.
