Freestyle swimmer Isabel Gose secured the European Championship silver medal in the 800-meter final in Paris, finishing behind Italy’s Simona Quadarella, while German teammate Maya Werner claimed the bronze medal with a personal-best performance at the Centre Aquatique Olympique.
Gose touched the wall in 8:18,44 minutes, placing second behind her long-standing rival Quadarella in the French capital. The 24-year-old Gose collected her third medal of the championships, adding to the open-water gold medals she captured the previous week in the knockout sprint and the mixed relay events, according to reports from sportschau.de and mdr.de.
“I’m super happy. Third race, third medal. I think that’s a good yield so far,” Gose said in an interview with ZDF, noting her relief at returning to the pool after her open-water campaigns. “It’s nice to have your own lane again and not having to look forward the whole time to estimate orientation. I’m really trying to go from race to race now and use the regeneration opportunities as well as possible.”
Werner Climbs the Podium with Breakthrough Time
Maya Werner joined Gose on the podium by claiming the bronze medal, completing a strong double-podium finish for the German team in the 800-meter freestyle final. The 21-year-old Werner slashed seven seconds off her previous personal best of 8:29,53 minutes, clocking a performance that surpassed her expectations.
“In recent years, I’ve often struggled with the 800 meters,” Werner said, as reported by sportschau.de. Swimming such a strong time made her “almost even happier” than the medal itself, she added.
Gose had advanced to the final as the second-fastest qualifier, setting up the tactical duel with Quadarella.
